Mangalore plane crash: Atleast 160 people died

Flight IX-892 goes down in a wooded valley about six miles from the Mangalore airport. Six people are pulled out alive from the wreckage.

An Air India flight from Dubai crashed Saturday morning in the city of Mangalore after apparently overshooting the runway, killing at least 160 people.

Televised images showed rescuers carrying limp bodies up a wooded slope and wreckage still burning hours after the crash, with bodies and the nearby ground covered with white foam emergency workers used to fight the blaze.

There were reportedly 166 passengers and crew on the Boeing 737-800 jet, which was believed to be 2 or 3 years old, a relatively new addition to the company's fleet.

The rescue operation was complicated by rain and the topography: Flight IX-892 went down in a wooded valley about six miles from the runway.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. An investigation was underway, and authorities were searching the debris field for the "black box" flight recorder.

Air traffic control reportedly received no distress message or other communication from the pilot suggesting the aircraft was having mechanical or operational problems. The pilot was reportedly a Russian expatriate, and the copilot was Indian.

The runway at the Mangalore airport is relatively short and has what's known as a "tabletop" layout, with a flattened area carved out of mountainous terrain overlooking a valley, giving pilots a relatively small margin of error.

The airport, which opened to international flights four years ago, was shut down after the disaster, which occurred about 6:15 a.m. local time.

"This is a major calamity," V.S. Acharya, home minister for the state of Karnataka, said to the CNN-IBN television network.

Six people who were pulled out alive were rushed to a government hospital with a burn unit, about 10 miles away. TV pictures showed a fireman carrying a body up a slope with difficulty, a colleague pushing him to help him ascend.

One survivor, Umer Farooq, said after being admitted to the hospital that "there was a loud noise, followed by fire."

"I managed to jump out of a broken window," he said.

TV images showed more than 15 firetrucks, 20 ambulances and 100 rescue workers standing at the periphery of the wreckage, with dense smoke billowing from the small valley and part of a mangled wing resting almost vertically on a slope.

The crash could be the deadliest in India since a November 1996 midair collision between a Saudi airliner and a Kazakh cargo plane near New Delhi that killed 349 people.

Air India, a former monopoly with an aging fleet and a poor on-time record, has struggled in recent years to compete with lower-cost private airlines as the industry has been deregulated. Air India Express, its low-cost arm, is part of its effort to respond to a changing competitive landscape as it struggles under a $3.3-billion debt load.

In October, the airline hit the headlines after pilots and a flight crew got into a fistfight in front of startled passengers.

The state-owned airline has had several mishaps over the years. Safety expert Mohan Ranganathan, a former Air India pilot, said recently that India badly needs an independent regulator and safety board.

In June 2008, Air India Flight IC-162 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, overshot the Mumbai airport by 45 miles after its pilots fell asleep. They were jolted awake when air traffic controllers caused a loud buzzer to go off in the cockpit.

Flights from Dubai to other parts of India tend to be crowded with Indians returning from manual labor and service jobs in the Middle East, as well as with high-tech professionals and traders.

Air travel has rebounded in India and the region after last year's slump as economies have rebounded. India saw about 4.1 million air travelers in January, a 23% increase, according to the Civil Aviation Ministry.

India is expected to be among the fastest-growing air travel markets in the world over the next 10 years, Airbus, the world's biggest plane maker, said in a recent statement. Over the next 20 years, Indian carriers will need 1,030 new aircraft worth $138 billion, it said.

Cyclone Laila causes heavy rains to Coastal Zones

New Delhi: Heavy rains are likely to lash coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu during the next two days as cyclone 'Laila' which further intensified and lay centred in the Bay of Bengal around 400 km east of Chennai, is expected to cross the Andhra coast on Thursday.

"Latest satellite images and radar observation indicates that cyclonic storm 'Laila' lies centred at about 400 km east of Chennai. This system is likely to intensify further and move in a west northwesterly direction and cross the Andhra coast between Ongole and Vishakapatnam in the early hours of Thursday," Met officials here told PTI.

They said scattered heavy and isolated very heavy rains would occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy rain may also occur over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from tonight.

According to them, strong wind with speeds reaching 65-75 kmph was likely to commence along Andhra Coast from tonight. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph may begin along north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast from tonight.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as strong surface winds from Southwesterly to Westerly direction with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph were likely off the Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.

It has been quite a while since we saw Chandra Siddartha make his presence felt after the unforgettable ‘Aa Naluguru’, here he is with his somewhat comeback venture so let us have a look.

Story:
Nandu (Sharwanand) hails from a village and he comes to the city. He has a helpful nature and doesn’t hesitate to go out of his way to help others. His colleague Paddu (Padmapriya) is stingy to the core and believes in money saving. A situation leads Nandu to take a portion for rent in the home of Paddu and on another instance, he rushes to see his father (Naresh) in the village. Paddu accompanies him and it is here she experiences the human values and touch. New issues crop up and how Nandu and Paddu face them forms the rest of the story.

Performances:
Sharwanand has been evolving as an actor with each passing movie. After his commendable performance in ‘Prasthanam’ this is yet another valuable performance in his career. He is getting better and better. He performed with great élan in many scenes and portrayed emotions wonderfully.

Padmapriya is a vision of beauty and though her low economic character makes her poor, the natural beauty still glows at all possible sequences. She has proved her mettle in the acting department as well. She appeared like senior Suhasini in some scenes.

Naresh has come up with one of his best performances in the recent past. He fits the bill well and there are few touching moments he gives.

Krishna Bhagawan was outright hilarious. His timing and his style of dialogue delivery gives splits of laughter. He is proving to be one of the most reliable comedians for the Telugu audience and is simply ‘unbeatable’.

The others were quite impressive. Especially RK, the TV artiste who plays the role of Padmapriya’s sister wearing sari, the NRI groom, they have given an impressive performance. Pragathi was natural and others were okay.

Analysis:
It’s a joy to watch a good movie 48 hours before the world watches it, in a premiere show. It’s a movie made by the director of ‘Aa Naluguru’. I starting watching the movie with closed mind-set at the outset. For my eyes those have watched grandeur of artificial settings on screen in many films, initially, it sounded dull and low. I looked at the hero in this film as ‘perfectionist material’ who may bring boredom through out the movie. But slowly, something captivated me and I was drowned in the bliss of humanity. I could see a Utopian Village, Utopian hero and Utopian thought…! It went on as a pleasant journey on the waters of humanity.

Any audience watches a movie connecting himself to the hero on screen. He enjoys the bliss of watching something that hero does, which he cannot do in real life. That has been the success of any cinema since 77 years in India. That has been the connection between the screen hero and common audience. If that were the case, in stead of getting connected to the violent and vulgar elements in a hero, it sounds certainly better to connect with the humanity, sacrifice and service motive in him that can be practiced in daily life.

‘Andari Bandhuvaya’ is one such movie which happens very seldom on Telugu screen. Such films should reach every eye and then surely it reaches its heart. Indeed, it’s a movie that culminates the essence of humanity with eyes and heart. One needs to look at the world with the eyes of this protagonist and need to speak with the heart of the same.

It’s a practical Vedanta, the movie showcases. ‘Live for others to enjoy the true nectar of life’ is the epitome of this film. Many dialogues and scenes in this film cut the heart deep and groove-in a pure form of thought. Writer Balabhadrapaatruni Ramani deserves right mention here.

“Pakshulaki konchem dhanyam, pasuvulaki konchem ghraasam, manishiki konchem saayam- ade jeevitam”- What a quotable dialogue?!

“Bathakadame kaadu, chaavadam kooda costly ye”- What a reality if we look at the present expensive last days on Corporate Hospital beds?!

“Nee Daggara koorchuni kaasepu edavochchaa?!”- What a human angle?! The scene between Padmapriya and Sharwanand is indeed moving.

The film is a feel good treat and it gives a strong message of how a positive outlook in life is required in today’s commercial and materialistic world. It might be too unrealistic to expect the viewers to transform once they see the film but even if one implements or demonstrates atleast 5% of the kindness then the world will be a much better place to live in. This is a clean family entertainer with its own element of humor, sentiment, drama and attachment. The dialogues are the major highlight of the movie while the script is very strong and intense. Screenplay was effective and it was supported well with the background score. Though two songs were non situational, they were well taken and quite melodious. Lyrics by Chaitanya Prasad are sensible and filled with good poetry. Editing was smooth. Costumes were suitable to the backdrop and the art department was realistic. The film has enough substance to make it big in film festival or bag few awards. All it takes is some gentle effort by the makers to promote it in the right manner. This is suitable for all genre of audience and everyone will have a point or two to take back home and use it in their life. Credit must be given to Chandra Siddartha for coming up with a thoughtful venture.

Youngsters should watch it and parents should make their children watch it to cultivate human values.

Bottom Line: Don’t Miss It…..

Story:

Ashok deva (Arjun) is a gangster in Mumbai and his wife gets killed in a Gang war-Ashok Leaves Mumbai and leads a fresh life with his sisters in a village in east Godavari District. Rama Krishna (Ram) is a young guy who fights for the right and doesn’t believe in Love. Rama Krishna’s elder Brother falls in love with Ashok’s Sister, What happens to their love story? To where does this story lead to- Forms the remaining plot.

Performances:

Arjun suited to the role well. He has given a controlled and commendable performance. Ram is energetic and engages us with his histrionics and good dances. Priya Anand is okay and looks cute in half sarees. Bindu Madhavi is passable and doesn’t leave a mark. Brahmanandam evokes some laughs. The remaining cast has done reasonably well. Art and Cinematography are good. Editing could have been better. Music By keeravani is Average. Story is old formatted one with beaten Screenplay and Direction is good in parts.

Analysis:

Jr.NTR has given the voiceover for the introduction of the hero’s characterization. Ram is energetic and hyper active as usual (even does a bit of over action in a couple of Scenes).He danced well in the songs. Arjun is definitely a Plus to the Movie. He dubbed his Voice and it suited well. Nassar is okay as village head. Priya Anand is okay but Bindu Madhavi appeared out of place as a village Belle. Gracy Singh has done a guest appearance.

This movie is 200th Film of Music director Keeravani; the songs can be rated as Average numbers. The songs looked not so appealing (frankly speaking boring at times) on the screen. “Title Song” (Rama Rama Krishna Krishna), “Lera Chanti” and “Ooh la laa” are catchy and melodious. Ananth Sriram has given some meaningful lyrics. Background Score has come up well.

Srivass who delivered a hit in the name of LAKHSYAM (2007) has come up with another flick which has action, entertainment and sentiment in equal shares. Neither the story nor the Scenes are new to Telugu Audiences but the Director has taken care in establishing the characterizations well. Ram’s Characterization was good. The pre-Interval episode created some curiosity. Brahmanandam’s Introduction Scenes evoked some laughs in the theater. The story and Screenplay are predictable but the characterizations and performances made it a bearable watch. Dialogues by M.Ratnam are good (even though there are a couple of double entendres).Performances lifted the movie to the next level. Cinematography by Sekhar was good; the lighting Scheme adopted in the Songs is admirable. The Graphics are not done to perfection. Poor work by the VFX department. The production values are rich.

The first half is adequate with a balance of action and entertainment. The second half focuses more on emotions and sentimental Scenes. Overall it’s a clean family Entertainer with a good blend of Action Scenes. There are fair Chances of becoming a Hit, Dil Raju may Strike gold (If this clicks at the Box office) after a Series a flops. The fate of the movie it completely depended on how well it gets received by the masses.

Minus: Old Story and Screenplay
Verdict: Family Entertainer and a good time pass flick in this Hot Summer.

The State of Jharkhand came into existence on the 15th of November,2000 . An Act to establish the Jharkhand Academic Council was enacted by the Jharkhand State Legislature and assented to by the Governor of the State on 26.12.2003, which was known as Jharkhand Academic Council Act 02.7.2003.

he Jharkhand Academic Council started functioning in a rented house in Rameshwaram where previously the Jharkhand Intermediate Council functioned, and the Secondary portion continued to function in Zila School Ranchi campus. The search for suitable accommodation for JAC continued unabated till at last the Council was housed in a portion of the Birsadih Club on rent. The present office was inaugurated by the hon’ble Chief Minister Sri Arjun Munda on 13.12.2003 under the Chairmanship of the then HRD Minister Sri Pashupati Nath Singh.

IIFA : 3 Idiots bags 14 nominations

Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots has bagged maximum number of nominations at the 2010 International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards to be held in Colombo from June 3.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 3 Idiots marked its presence in all categories except best supporting actress. It has received 14 nominations including best film, best actor, best director and best actress, among others.

Other films nominated are Saif Ali Khan's Love Aaj Kal that has bagged nine nominations, while IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Paa and Shahid Kapoor's Kaminey both got eight nominations each.
Colombo marks the second decade of IIFA. The nominees for the Micromax IIFA Awards 2010 are a compilation of the best work from the previous year and the suspense and celebration of these worthy nominations will undoubtedly create another magical IIFA, said Sabbas Joseph, one of the directors of Wizcraft, in a statement.

The nominations were released after voting in March. Results were audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The event will take place June 3-5 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Badmaash Company@Review Hindi Movie 2010

Theres a longish sequence in an American eatery in the second-half of this deeply flawed and yet refreshingly cool urbane casual and yet highly cinematic work where Shahid Kapoors Karan, by now on the road to seemingly irredeemable moral degeneration is told by his partner, played by newcomer Vir Das, that he wants out.

The way that sequence progresses and the manner in which the two actors play out a conventional friends-falling-apart moment, just makes you forgive all the excesses of inflated self-worth that the script suffers from in the last 90 minutes of this endearing though exasperating experience.

Badmaash Company is a film that is too smart for its own good. The main characters, four friends bonded by the collective will to grow rich overnight, go through a series of caper experiences.

Not all of it is either convincing or even interesting. After a point, we know exactly where this quartet is hurling to. And the slide out of moral degeneration is never touching enough to make us shed a tear for these misguided over-reachers.

The doom comes none too soon, and then the narrative proceeds without a proper graph.

By the time Karan (Shahid Kapoor)s spunky girl Bulbul (Anushka Sharma) leaves him the script begins to look like one of those subverted morality tales from the house of the Bhatts where the heroes talk with clenched fists and heroines weep in their pillows as their companions come home in a drunken stupor.

Weve been here before. But wait. There is a sense of intuitive cockiness about the narrative which just sees the films improbable mixture of the trendy and the trite (in how many ways will the upright father ask the devil-may-care son to leave home as the mother bites her lips and wrings her hands???) to the final stretch of predictable moral redemption.

There is a sense of the predictable and yet the unpredictable in the storytelling. Debutant director Parmeet Sethis screenplay is one of those things that you want to believe merely because it sounds so smart on paper.

But not all of this makes complete or even incomplete sense. The climax about colour-bleeding shirts being sold to America as the Next Best Thing is much too far-fetched to work even as a part of a con caper.

Nonetheless Badmaash Company has a lot going for itself. The first-half when Karan meets Bulbul, Chandu and Chang to create an instantly materialistic energy, gets you interested in these out-of-control lives.

You dont quite empathize with their overweening goals. But at least they seem to know their minds, even if on occasions the plot doesnt seem to know what its doing.

Theres something pitch-friendly about the four actors and the way they tackle the plot -material which never seems fully sure of itself. Its sometimes cool sometimes over-reaching itself.

If the film holds together its because of the bonafide enthusiasm and unconditional surrender to the proceedings of the actors.

Shahid Kapoor pitches in another perfectly poised and subtle performance even though his characters graph gets blurred towards the end. You cant stop caring for Karans character because Shahid doesnt let go of his centre even when the narrative gets shaky.

Anushka Sharma in a stunning makeover conveys her characters spirit and spunk through her well-toned body language and that twinkle in the eye. Tragically a lot of her speech and morality, and this goes for a lot of films careless periodicity, is not 1990s (the films setting) at all.

Vir Das as the film buff with a roving eye negotiates his character with gentle care. Heres one actor who knows what hes doing even when his character doesnt. And Meiyang Chang as the chinky-eyed alcohol guzzling Gangtok-guy seems made for his character.

Badmaash Company is an extremely smart and smart-looking film. But its sassy all-knowing tone cannot hide a certain bankruptcy of genuinely inventive ideas. This is a fatally-flawed film about seriously flawed characters. The packaging is glamorous but not over-done. The dialogues convey a ring of truth without bending backwards to be cool.

And though guilty of extravagant flights of fancy (the way our quartet of protagonists plunder the American Dream can only be called wishful thinking) Badmaash Company has enough going for itself to make it an experience worth our while.

And never mind the blind spots. Whoever said life in the movies was meant to be a bed of roses?

Simha is a complete one man show.Nandamuri Balakrishna strikes again with roaring performence.The second half of the movie will be a block buster.The dialogues in the second half of the movie are at the peak.

Boyapati Sreenu triumphs once again. He gives starving fans a reasonably good movie ‘Simha’ starring Balakrishna in dual role. Though Simha cannot be termed as an extraordinary film what makes it a decent watch is that the director enagages the audience with his content and reels them without any suspension of disbelief. He had simply learnt from the mistakes from the previous directors, cut out the bombastic and over the top dialogues and gave a simplistic, linear story that a normal moviegoer could understand. In other words he made an ordinary formula film keeping all elements in control. He had not concentrated on spending heavily on songs, settings, multiple characters but relied more on keeping the action quotient high while retaining the human element of the story.

The screenplay is taut but the film is not without flaws. The film moves slowly initially and again the latter half, during the homam scenes stretches quite a bit. The romance between the ladies Namitha, Sneha Ullal, Nayanatara hasn’t been handled well and Balakrishna’s awkwardness was visible. Despite some tasteless comedy the film blends action and drama well and the best part of the film is that there is nothing loud from either the villain or the hero which is quite unexpected.

Namitha is obscenely obese and you could see layers of fat jutting out from every part of her body, her clothes made her look worse. It’s baffling to see fifty plus heroes romancing girls half their age but if this is want people want to see then no complaints. About Balakrishna, he performs admirably, does a competent job, he stands out in the dying scene with Nayanatara. The lady who played Balakrishna’s grandma looks out of place, a clear misfit. A local talent could have worked better.

Nayanatara looks outlandish in her costumes, has little to do and gives silent support to her onscreen husband. Sneha Ullal looks bloated but chips in what is required of her. A few numbers are good to listen but a few are wrongly placed in the film. Brahmanandam, Jhansi are a sheer waste. Venu Madhav is okay, feels good to see him after a long time. He is a professor in the college and is angling for Namitha, his dialogues bring in mild laughs.

And the story, it is about a college professor Srimannarayana (Balakrishna) whose student, lady love Sneha Ulall is having a difficult time letting go off her past. Her brother’s killer is her groom and he’s stalking her after she flees from home on the wedding day. A series of events unfold and in a flashback episode it is revealed that the killer and his father’s enemity is not just with Sneha Ullal but Balakrishna too.

Simha is not an enriching, soul stirring, emotionally resonant film but it is definitely a good offering, a jumbo mix of action and little drama for holiday movie going crowd.

Story

Here is a man who is strong and weird, takes Polaroid snaps and has tattoos on his body. His only objective is to trace someone who happens to be a killer. That killer took the life of his girlfriend, the only person he loved.
The story is about Sanjay Singhania (Aamir), a high profile business magnate currently suffering from short term memory loss. He is out to seek vengeance on that person who was responsible for the death of Kalpana (Asin) and to counter his problem, he uses the camera and if the evidence is strong, he gets it tattooed on his body.
His personality and traits get the attention of Sunita (Jiah Khan) and though he is not too keen on her, she happens to play an instrumental role in his life. Does Sanjay get to the killer, is Sunita of any use to him, you must go to the theatre to find that out.

Performances:
Aamir Khan has once again reiterated and embossed his name on 'Mr Perfectionist' tag and came out with a mind blowing performance. His dialogues were just few but then it was his brawny physique and excellent body language with expressions that did the magic.
Asin again was on equal footing and lived up to the hype that was being generated about her. Jiah gave a delectable performance but still she does manage to get those lusty looks despite being covered from head to toe. Pradeep Rawath is the bad guy who matched the high caliber performance of Aamir and did full justice to the role.

The others were insignificant but added value to the film.

Coming to technical aspects, the director has come out with some really impressive narrative aided with masterly presentation. The music and cinematography were the life and soul to the movie along with the performances. Editing was crisp, dialogues were less but meaningful, script was taut, screenplay was simply superb. The other departments also added to the rich appeal of the movie.

Analysis
The film has it all to take it to the success mark comfortably and there are some chances that it can take the blockbuster trophy too provided publicity rocks entire north India. Everything went well with the film be it the performance department or the technical department.

Though this is a remake, the entire team made sure that it had enough flavor to keep the audience engaged. Irony is, this passes the three hour mark but manages to score zero idle time. The pace of the movie has been uniform and the fact remains that those who have seen the original and got used to Suriya may not find it that exciting but they can surely see it as an engaging flick.

Though it might take a lead from the international masterpiece 'Memento', it is not a replica per se and the makers have been sensible enough to bring about a story of their own and create enough twists and turns so that the length does not affect the momentum. The performance department has been of the highest order and this film is on its way to create a new revolution since the north has not seen such psychological types ever before. But it is a run of the mill for Telugu audiences and southern circuit.
